About

Daphne Art Foundation invites the community to Raul Seca, Jr.'s solo exhibition A Reflection of a Diabetic during an opening reception on Friday, September 1 from 7:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. at Casa Daphne, located at 1420 Washington Street. Admission is free and open to all.

Founded in 2019, Daphne Art Foundation is a nonprofit arts organization that focuses on improving the quality of life through transformative cultural experiences. Our mission is to advance the visual, performing, and media arts in our border region. We do this by providing residencies to artists and creatives, exhibiting and promoting artists, and cultivating arts appreciation and participation.

A Reflection of a Diabetic is Raul Seca, Jr.'s deep reflection of the last 20 years surrounding his video and photography work, reminiscing on his processes, and exploring a very intimate timeline of his life with type 1 diabetes.

Raul Seca, Jr. was born in Laredo. He is a videographer, photographer, and musician. He first felt a spark with film when he was videotaping home movies with his family at 11 years of age, the same age he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (2004). It was difficult for him, but his childhood with the disease was made easier when he met his first camcorder. It gave him joy and a sense of adventure. Raul is currently a freelance artist and has produced work for various Laredo businesses. He enjoys abstract, candid, street, documentary, and portrait styles of photography.  He also has an electronic/ambient music project called Diabetic Jesus. He loves making music.

This show is Raul's way of showing gratitude to the community of Laredo as he ventures to start school in Austin.  It is a way for him to look back on the evolution of his artistic practice and share it as an exhibition program.

We hope to see you there!
