About

There are places that will never be the same. What happens to a city as it transforms?

Daphne Art Foundation invites you to the opening reception of MONOLITH, a photographic series by artist and curator Hector Hernandez.

Through photographs of places that have long shaped Laredo’s landscape, particularly its South Side, Hernandez asks us to look again at the buildings, businesses, signs, and spaces we often pass without noticing.

Near the river, traces of Laredo’s connection to Mexico remain visible in colorful signs, hand-painted graphics, neighborhood restaurants, bakeries, shops, and businesses built through generations of work. As the city continues to expand and change, some of these places are disappearing or becoming harder to recognize.

MONOLITH asks us to slow down and remember them.

Hernandez marks these spaces with a recurring red flag and faceless feminine figures, drawing attention to places whose histories may otherwise fade from view.

Join us at Casa Daphne to experience the exhibition, meet the artist, and reflect on the places and people that have made Laredo what it is today.
