Daphne Art Foundation is happy to invite the community to an opening reception at the Martha Fenstermaker Memorial Visual Arts Gallery on Friday, May 31 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. for the exhibition “Unusually Familiar,” curated by Daphne’s Executive Director Maritza Bautista.

Daphne Art Foundation, with the support from the Engineering, Design, and Construction Management Technology Department at Laredo College, is honored to present Unusually Familiar, an exhibition that delves into the intricacies of the human experience through the diverse lenses of eight emerging South Texas artists.

The exhibition is about connection. It reveals extraordinary depths in the ordinary. At the same time, it celebrates the richness and complexity of different lives and experiences. The work in the show sparks an awareness, or memory of something unlived that seems a little too familiar. In a way, Unusually Familiar also delves into the realm of imagination, inviting the viewer to discover some of the fragments they experience through the artwork, and to piece together habitual conventions that frame everyday life, and memories.
A photo will reveal the unknown. An inanimate object will prompt a smile. A moment of fear and confusion will stop time. All too unusually familiar.
Through a variety of mediums, techniques, and skills, the artists present artwork that serve as windows into the multifaceted, shared nature of our human existence. Unusually Familiar includes work that talks about women and hard labor; the delicate process of self-discovery and acceptance; the internal struggle and the courage that may result from confronting traumas; and joy, and the resilience of the human spirit.
Unusually Familiar will be on view from May 31 to July 26, 2024.
The Martha Fenstermaker Memorial Visual Arts Gallery is located in the Visual and Performing Arts Center at Laredo College, West End Washington St.
